North Park does not have a single school boundary that covers the entire neighborhood. A home’s assigned public school depends on its exact street address, and properties only a block or two apart can be assigned to different schools.
After living in North Park since 2001 and helping San Diego buyers and sellers since 2004, I have seen this become an important part of the home search for families with children. The two elementary schools buyers ask us about most often are McKinley Elementary School and Jefferson Elementary School.
The most important thing to understand is that a North Park address, a 92104 ZIP code, or proximity to a school does not automatically determine where a child can enroll. You need to verify the exact property address through the San Diego Unified School District.
What Are the Elementary School Boundaries in North Park?
McKinley and Jefferson serve significant portions of North Park, but their attendance areas do not match the informal neighborhood boundaries people commonly use.
The San Diego Unified School District reviews attendance boundaries annually. Its published maps are intended only as general guides, and the district recommends using its address-based School Finder to confirm the schools assigned to a particular property.
McKinley Elementary School Boundary
McKinley Elementary School is located at 3045 Felton Street. It is a public TK-through-fifth-grade school and an authorized International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme school.
Based on the district’s published 2025-26 attendance map, the McKinley area generally includes portions of eastern and southeastern North Park around streets such as:
- Felton Street
- Gregory Street
- Redwood Street
- Palm Street
- Laurel Street
- 32nd Street
- 34th Street
- Portions of the neighborhood extending east toward Boundary Street and Interstate 805
These are only general reference points. The actual boundary is irregular and does not follow one simple north-to-south street. Some blocks near McKinley may fall outside its attendance area.
Jefferson Elementary School Boundary
Jefferson Elementary School is located at 3770 Utah Street. The school combines an International Baccalaureate program with a STEAM focus involving science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
The district’s 2025-26 map generally shows Jefferson serving parts of central and western North Park around streets such as:
- Utah Street
- Arizona Street
- Texas Street
- Louisiana Street
- Mississippi Street
- Hamilton Street
- Areas extending west toward Park Boulevard and Balboa Park
Again, this is an approximate description rather than a guarantee. The Jefferson attendance area has several turns and irregular edges, particularly near University Avenue, Balboa Park, Pershing Drive, and the eastern edge adjoining the McKinley area.
Not Every North Park Home Is Assigned to McKinley or Jefferson Elementary
One of the biggest misconceptions is that every North Park home belongs to either McKinley or Jefferson.
Depending on the exact location, especially near the eastern, southern, or northern edges of the neighborhood, an address may be assigned to another nearby elementary school. The district maps show neighboring attendance areas for schools including Cherokee Point, Rowan, and Golden Hill.
This is why the phrase “located in North Park” is not enough when school placement is an important part of the purchase.
Why the Exact Address Matters
School boundaries can run through streets, around individual blocks, and along less obvious geographic lines. In some locations, homes on opposite sides of the same street may have different assigned schools.
Buyers sometimes rely on:
- Zillow, Redfin, or another real estate portal
- The listing agent’s remarks
- A neighborhood map
- The property’s ZIP code
- The distance between the home and the school
- Information from a previous owner
Those can be useful starting points, but none should replace confirmation from San Diego Unified and the school itself.
The district specifically states that its online information cannot be guaranteed to be 100 percent accurate and instructs families to contact the school to confirm eligibility before taking action.
A North Park Buyer Who Changed Homes Because of the Boundary
We once worked with buyers who found a home near Pershing Avenue and Landis Street that they really liked. The home met many of their needs, but having their children attend McKinley Elementary was an important part of their plan.
After researching the school assignment, they realized the property did not meet that requirement. Even though they loved the house, they decided not to move forward.
They eventually purchased a home on Gregory Street that was within the school boundary they wanted at that time.
That experience shows why I recommend checking the school boundary before becoming emotionally attached to a property. It is difficult to walk away after imagining your family in a home, but it is much harder to discover the boundary issue after writing an offer or completing the purchase.
School boundaries can change, so this example should not be used to determine the current assignment of another property on Pershing, Landis, or Gregory. Every address still needs to be checked individually.
McKinley Elementary Versus Jefferson Elementary
Both McKinley and Jefferson are public elementary schools within San Diego Unified, and both offer International Baccalaureate-based programs. Their programs and surrounding locations, however, are not identical.
How Buyers Often View McKinley
In our experience, McKinley is the school requested most frequently by North Park buyers with elementary-age children. Families often mention its academic reputation, IB Primary Years Programme, parent involvement, and residential setting.
The streets surrounding McKinley also tend to feel more residential than the busier commercial portions of central North Park.
School performance information changes over time, so parents should review current state data, visit the school, speak with administrators, and decide which environment is appropriate for their child. I do not believe a family should choose a school based on a single online score.
How Buyers Often View Jefferson
Jefferson attracts families interested in its combination of International Baccalaureate and STEAM education. It is located closer to some of North Park’s busier streets, businesses, restaurants, and higher-density housing.
From my experience driving and showing homes throughout the neighborhood, the area around Jefferson can feel more congested than the streets surrounding McKinley. Some families like being close to the center of North Park, while others prefer a quieter residential setting.
Neither preference is right or wrong. It depends on the family, the child, the commute, the housing budget, and the type of neighborhood setting they want.
How to Confirm a North Park School Boundary
The best approach is to verify the school assignment before touring seriously or writing an offer.
Use the Current SDUSD School Finder
San Diego Unified currently provides a School Finder labeled for the 2026-27 school year. After entering an exact street address, the tool displays the assigned elementary, middle, and high schools.
Follow these steps:
- Enter the complete property address, including the street number.
- Select the matching address from the suggested results.
- Review the elementary, middle, and high school assignments.
- Read any additional notes about optional areas or special conditions.
- Save or print the results for your records.
Do not search only by street name or click approximately on the map when you already know the full address.
Call the School
Contact the assigned school and ask the enrollment office to confirm that the property is currently within its resident boundary.

San Diego Unified also directs families to its Attendance Boundaries Office at 619-725-5668 for assistance with a specific address.
Ask Your Realtor to Help Research the Address
A local real estate agent should help you locate current district resources and identify potential boundary concerns early in your search.
However, your Realtor should not be the final authority on school enrollment. The final confirmation should come directly from San Diego Unified and the school.
Can a Child Attend McKinley or Jefferson From Outside the Boundary?
A family may apply to attend a school outside its resident attendance area through San Diego Unified’s School Choice program. The program provides access to schools and specialized programs outside a family’s neighborhood boundary.
Admission through School Choice is not guaranteed. Placement may depend on available space, district priorities, application timing, and the lottery process.
My advice is not to buy a home outside the desired boundary while assuming a Choice application will be approved. Treat acceptance through Choice as a possibility rather than a certainty.
Do School Boundaries Affect North Park Real Estate?
They can affect buyer interest.
When several homes offer similar size, condition, and pricing, a school assignment may become one of the deciding factors for a family. Some buyers will remove an otherwise suitable home from consideration when it falls outside their preferred boundary, just as the buyers in our Pershing and Landis example did.
That does not mean every home within one boundary will sell for more, or that the school boundary alone determines value. Home condition, location, lot size, architecture, parking, walkability, noise, and market conditions all matter.
It does mean that school information should be researched and marketed accurately. Sellers and agents should never claim that a property is assigned to McKinley, Jefferson, or another school without checking the exact address using current district information.
If you own a North Park home and plan to list it, the same rule applies. Confirm your assigned schools with the district before that information is entered into the MLS. An incorrect school claim can cost you a buyer and expose you to a misrepresentation claim after closing.

The mistakes I see most often include:
- Assuming every 92104 property has the same assigned schools
- Believing the closest school must be the assigned school
- Relying solely on a real estate website
- Using a boundary map from a previous school year
- Checking the street but not the exact house number
- Assuming School Choice acceptance is automatic
- Waiting until after an offer is accepted to investigate the boundary
The district’s address-based School Finder is currently labeled 2026-27, while some of the individual PDF maps available through the district are labeled 2025-26. That difference alone shows why buyers should use the current address search and confirm the result directly with the school.
Frequently Asked Questions About North Park School Boundaries
Is every North Park home assigned to McKinley Elementary?
No. McKinley serves only part of North Park. Other North Park properties may be assigned to Jefferson or another nearby elementary school.
Does living within walking distance guarantee enrollment?
No. Distance from the school does not determine the assignment. The exact address must fall within the school’s current attendance boundary.
Can two nearby homes have different assigned schools?
Yes. Boundary lines can separate nearby blocks and, in some cases, different sides of a street.
Can school boundaries change after buying a home?

My Advice to North Park Homebuyers
Verify the school boundary before falling in love with a home.
Start the research as soon as you identify an area you like. Check every property separately, even when two homes are only a few blocks apart. Then confirm the result with the school before writing an offer that depends on a particular enrollment assignment.
